Nelson Mandela, became prisoner #466 in 1964 for leading an anti-apartheid group against the South African government. This past Wednesday, on Mandela's 94th birthday, now known as Nelson Mandela International Day, the prisoner turned President of South Africa held the North American debut of the clothing brand founded by him and designed in his honor, 466/64, pronounced "four double six, six four", representing his prisoner number and the year he entered into his 27 year prison stay.
The collection, which includes men, women and children's wear can be currently found online at shop56664com, The collection will also be shown at NY Fashion Week in September and distributed to fine department stores next Spring. Sixty percent of the collection is produced in South Africa. The brand intends that the global expansion will increase funds flowing into South Africa and create more jobs in the South African textile industry. The brand also hopes to provide a sustainable source of income for the 46664 Foundation, the independent, not-for-profit organization also set up in Mr. Mandela's honor, to confront issues of social injustice, most notably global HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.
